Vicky Arvaniti and Maria TsiartsianiThe Greek pair of Vicky Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani played in their first FIVB World Tour final at Marseilles on Sunday but ended up on the losing side.

After Vasso Karadassiou decided to end her career last autumn, Arvaniti was paired up with Tsiartsiani but had little success on international level until last weekend.

They were seeded at number 20 for the Marseilles tournament but managed to reached the final.

On Sunday they faced the American pair of Jen Kessy and April Ross, who were third-seeded.

The US duo won 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) to claim the gold medal, leaving the silver for the Greeks.

"The Americans proved too strong opponents. We are very happy with our overall performance in this tournament, as we played excellent beach volleyball from start to finish and we never fell below the standards we had set," said Arvaniti.

Greek team coach Panayiotis Zakynthinos stated that "the girls had an amazing tournament and showed their real abilities. The point now is to maintain this high level."

After Greece's best ever beach volleyball player, Vasso Karadassiou quit the sport in September, Arvaniti had been looking for the best solution for the national team setup.

Maria Tsiartsiani along with Thalia Koutroumanidou had an excellent season that saw them qualify to the Olympic Games and come close to reaching the second round of the tournament in Beijing.

"I believe she is the best possible choice as Maria is an experienced athlete with many skills and the desire to be successful in the sport. Given all that and the determination we both have for hard work I think we can be a strong pair that can maintain a high level," stated Arvaniti.

The only issue that remains open for the national team is the appointment of a coach.
