Tuesday, October 09, 2007 : Panathinaikos seeded in first pot

UEFA CupThe five Greek sides in the UEFA Cup will find out this afternoon who they will face in the group stage of the competition, following the draw in Switzerland.

Greece has more teams than any other country in this round of the UEFA Cup. Germany is next with four out of the 40 sides that have qualified. England has three and World Cup holders Italy only have one representative - Fiorentina.

Panathinaikos are the top seeded Greek team and will go in Pot 1 based on UEFA's coefficient system. This means the Greens will avoid the likes of Villareal, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht.

However, AEK, who are in Pot 2 could get drawn against one of these sides. Panionios are in Pot 2 but Larissa and Aris face the toughest tasks as they are the lowest ranked Greek sides and have been placed in Pot 5.

The draw is due to begin at 1 p.m. Greek time.

The participants will be drawn into eight groups of five with each side playing two games at home and two away.

The winners, runners-up and third-placed sides from each group progress to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League group stage.

At this point, the traditional two-game format is used with the exception of the final, which is a one-off game that will be played at the City of Manchester Stadium, the home of Manchester City FC on 14 May 2008.
