Tuesday, July 06, 2010 : Barney Spender, Graham Wood and George Georgakopoulos look ahead to the first semi final

The Dutch will have plenty of support in Cape TownAnd then there were four. From the 32 teams that kicked off this World Cup just four remain and by Tuesday evening we will know the first of our 2010 finalists. In the blue corner we have Uruguay, champions in 1930 and 1950, while in the orange corner it is the Netherlands. In the 1970s they were the team to watch, they invented Total Football. They never fulfilled their destiny back then so can the current crop finally turn the world orange? SIG writers Barney Spender, Graham Wood, Nick Malkoutzis and George Georgakopoulos put their heads on the block as they try to work out who will be in the final on Sunday.

Netherlands v Uruguay
Venue: Green Point Stadium, Cape Town
Time: 2130 Greece time, 1830 GMT
Referee: Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan)

Barney says: Not many of us expected two-time winners Uruguay to be the last South American side standing and just one match away from the final. They have played well in parts but owed their place in the last four to some monumental luck against Ghana in the last eight. That came at a price though, notably in the absence of Luis Suarez who is serving a one match suspension for his infamous "hand of God". Diego Forlan remains but the absence of Suarez is great news for the Dutch who are vying to get to their first final since two defeats in 1974 and 1978. Wesley Sneider is looking good, Mark van Bommell looks ready to tackle a truck at the moment and Arjen Robben could just be the difference. The Uzbek ref took charge of Germany 's four-goal demolition of Argentina .

Verdict: Uruguay 1 Netherlands 2

Graham says: Uruguay have undoubtedly surprised everyone by getting this far and it certainly is not beyond them to go on and win it with the way they keep getting the rub of the green. As the Spender man points out though, they may find it tough against the Dutch without Suarez, he has been one of their most important players in South Africa alongside their other top man Diego Forlan. I for one am pleased to see Forlan - once jokingly referred to as Diego Forlorn by the British press after failing to make the grade at Manchester United- doing so well. Holland , who shocked Brazil in the quarters, will be trying to keep him on a tight leash. The Oranje are as compact and efficient as they have been in years and the strength of their midfield I think will again send them through to the final. It really could be their year.

Verdict: Uruguay 0 Netherlands 1

George says: Both teams are already successful having made it this far, but the lure of a World Cup final will be so strong that should force them both to be a little more cagey. Uruguay will have a mammoth task in trying to deal with the Dutch midfield that has got to be one of the best in the world, but the Europeans' strikers have not convinced me they can easily break a defence like Uruguay's. Having said that, the absence of Diego Fucile (suspended) and possibly of captain Diego Lugano (injured) will prove crucial for la Celeste. Ururguay got to the semis without beating a single European side. They might still beat Spain in the 3rd-place playoff though.

Verdict: Uruguay 0 Netherlands 2

Nick says: I have bet against the Netherlands in almost every game now and each time they proved me wrong. Without hitting the heights of orange perfection, they have managed to get the results they need. I though Brazil would have to much for them and for 45 minutes they did but the Dutch showed a resilience that is not often associated with them in the latter stages of big tournaments, and of course, Brazil committed footballing suicide by panicking. But this is a Dutch side unlike others - their consistence lies not in being inconsistent but scarily consistent. They won all their qualification games and all their games in South Africa - no other side had got near that. In fact they are on an incredible winning streak under Bert van Marwijk. Given that Uruguay have overachieved already and that at least a couple of key players will be out for this game, only a Holland win makes sense. But as all my SIG colleagues have predicted exactly this, I will pick Uruguay just to make it interesting. A stout defensive performance to frustrate the Dutch, who are even worse at penalties than England.

Verdict: Holland 0 Uruguay 0 (Uruguay to win on penalties)

On Wednesday, will look ahead to the second semi betzeen Germany and Spain
