Joy for the Dutch and for Uruguay, disappointment for Dunga's Brazil, total and utter heartbreak for the Black Stars of Ghana. The world (outside the confines of Greater Montevideo) wept when Asamoah Gyan made such a horse's arse of that 120th minute penalty. Cruel game this when the better side goes home empty-handed. But the drama was incredible - and that is what we are looking for in the second round of quarter-final matches. Germany face Argentina in the clash of former champions while Paraguay take on Spain. Graham Wood and Barney Spender look at where the tears are going to be come Saturday night.
Argentina v Germany
Venue: Green Point Stadium, Cape Town
Time: 1700 Greece, 1400 GMT
Graham says: Always a titanic battle of a fixture, I'm expecting another closely fought encounter between two teams who have played some of the best football at this World Cup. One of my earliest memories of watching the World Cup was obviously Italia '90 when as an 11-year-old I watched in disbelief Gazza's tears and experienced the agony of THAT penalty shoot-out loss to the Germans, who went on to beat Argentina 1-0 in an ill-tempered final which famously saw two players sent off for the first time. It was sweet German revenge for their 3-2 loss to Argentina in the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico. The current Argentina crop have the better team on paper and are favourites to progress, but I can't help but think that the Germans will snatch it. It would also be poetic justice for a certain Thomas Mueller. The young midfielder was dumbfounded when after his debut which came against the Argentines, Diego Maradona did not recognise the fresh faced youngster and claimed he looked like a ball boy. While undoubtedly a great player, it's moments like this which confirm his suspect character as a person and one of the reasons why it is difficult to respect him. I for one, hope that Mueller, one of few young players to sparkle in South Africa, puts Maradona and his circus out of the competition.
Verdict: Argentina 1 Germany 1 (Germany to win on penalties)
Barney says: Horrified to realise how young Graham is. His first World Cup memory in 1990 aged 11? I remember that game vividly, watching it with my girlfriend of the time, getting steadily less sober and more vociferous (Paul Parker had a lot to answer for that night) in her apartment in East Sheen, London. The metropolis dimmed its lights that night. Or is it me just getting old? Don't answer that. My first memories are of Brazil, Italy, West Germany back in 1970...before the modern rivalry of these two teams really got going. Argentina beat West Germany in the 1986 final (a bloke called Maradona might have been partly responsible for that) but the Germans thanks to a Klinsmann dive got their revenge in the final four years later (when Graham was still 11). Four years ago, the Germans did them again on penalties in the quarter-final. This time, I feel, it is going the other way. Germany have looked good in parts but Australia and England flattered them while they actually lost to Serbia and were second best in a draw against Ghana. Indeed, against the English they looked distinctly ropey at the back and I think the likes of Messi and Higuain and Tevez are going to enjoy that. Perhaps the Argentines have a flakey side when put under pressure but as no one, bar Mexico in parts, has done it yet we don't really know how they will respond.
Verdict: Argentina 2 Germany 1
FINAL SCORE: ARGENTINA 0 GERMANY 4
Spain v Paraguay
Venue: Ellis Park, Johannesburg
Time: 2130 Greece; 1830 GMT
Graham says: I spent much of the last 48 hours playing out the quarter-final matches on my Playstation 3 (if you can't watch it, simulate it!- Is that what your missus says? Ed) and every time Spain came out on top. If that is not a lucky omen then I don't know what it is. Simply, Spain seem to have moved up a gear and have grown in confidence as the tournament has worn on. Fernando Torres may be struggling due to the fact he has recently come back from a knee injury but David Villa is in superb form and will be difficult to stop. Vicente Del Bosque also has the luxury of bringing on Fernando Llorente if Torres is not firing. Paraguay have done very to get this far. A compact, hard-working team, but unfortunately you need more than that to win a World Cup.
Verdict: Spain 2 Paraguay 0
Barney says: Playstation my left pinky. You can tell this lad only joined the party in 1990, otherwise he would be talking about Subbuteo and his Dukla Prague away kit ...but that is another story. There have been quite a few surprises in this World Cup so it is best not to rule out the possibility of a Paraguay win. They were fortunate to scrape past Japan but they play a neat game and will see this as their final. They will be giving everything. Spain, though, after that slow start are beginning to remind us why we endured inter-generational Iglesias songs two years ago as they charmed us on their way to winning Euro 2008. Amazingly, given the strength of Real Madrid and Barcelona over the years, Spain have never reached the semi-finals before. That will change at Ellis Park - and I will now lay a little wager that they will make it through to their first final.
Verdict: Spain 3 Paraguay 1
FINAL SCORE: SPAIN 1 PARAGUAY 0
