Thursday, April 08, 2010 : Crunch time at the top and bottom of the Super League
Like Barney, Ray Charles has Georgia on his mindA total of 300 fans welcomed Panathinaikos at Yiannina airport in mid-week to give their team a ‘champions' welcome ahead of their Greek cup semi-final. There will be a few more on Sunday evening at the OAKA as the Greens look odds on to seal their first title since 2004. The situation is simple. With just two matches to play PAO lead reigning champions and arch rivals Olympiakos by six points, so all they need to do is avoid defeat at home to Iraklis. As for the relegation battle, it promises to be a downright dirty fight for survival. Graham Wood and Nick Malkoutzis, filling in for the Georgia-bound Barney Spender, try to figure what's going to happen in Round 29.

Nobody really knows what Barney is doing in Tbilisi, including Barney himself, but as a football aficionado he will no doubt be asking the locals about the great Dinamo Tbilisi side of the early 1980s. Ask any West Ham fan and they will tell you that the Dinamo side that played at Upton Park in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1981 was the greatest visiting team to ever take to the hallowed East London turf. If you need any proof, here it is. Oh, and Barney, they seem to like a good old fashioned knees-up in that part of the world as well.

Sunday April 11 (all games 7pm kick off; all on Nova except where marked)

Asteras Tripolis v Aris

GW says: A tricky one. Aris have the final play-off place wrapped up while Asteras are still not totally safe so in theory the laws of desperation would favour the men from Tripoli. But Aris will be keen to close out their league campaign on a high ahead of the cup final date with Panathinaikos so I'm going for a draw.

Verdict: 1-1

NM says: Like a football-mad Cyclops, Aris will have one eye on the upcoming Greek Cup final, which could give their chisel-chinned manager Hector Raul Cuper an instant success just a few months after arriving in the country. For this reason alone, Asteras will be able to capitalize and get the win they need.

Verdict: 2-0

Ergotelis v PAS Yiannina

GW says: Like Tripolis, Ergotelis are still not out of danger and are always a handful at home. Yiannina have seen their cup run - which ended with the semi-final defeat to Panathinaikos in mid-week - adversely effect their league form and need a win to keep their survival hopes alive. These one's usually end in a draw, and I think the same will apply here.

Verdict: 0-0

NM says: The cup dream is over for PAS but their main target this season was surely to stay in the Super League. Their manager Nikos Anastopoulos knew how to score a spectacular goal in his time as an Olympiakos striker. How he could do with one of his players emulating him. This has draw written all over it.

Verdict: 0-0

Levadiakos v AEK Athens (Skai)

GW says: Levadiakos deserve all the credit if they do manage a great escape but I can't see them beating an AEK team who are finishing the season as strongly as they began it weakly. The Yellows are priming their feathers for the play-offs and they will take this one.

Verdict: 0-1

NM says: Levadiakos need the points, AEK are indifferent but much stronger. It makes for an interesting combination and one that points at a drew being a decent result for both sides.

Verdict: 1-1

Panathinaikos v Iraklis

GW says: I expect jubilant scenes and plenty of fireworks, as well as a Panathhinaikos victory, at the OAKA as the Greens clinch their first title success since winning the Double in 2004. Despite losing twice to Olympiakos, Djibril Cisse and Co. have played the best football for the duration of the campaign and they fully deserve the trophy.

Verdict: 2-0

Arise Sir JoNM says: This one will be all about Panathinaikos and the collective sigh of relief that will be breathed by Greens everywhere after years of having to bow to the superiority of Olympiakos. But if I may digress, if anyone should be lauded on Sunday, then that man is Iraklis manager Josef Bubenko. He took over a team destined for relegation this season and instantly transformed them into world beaters, taking the Thessaloniki-side on an unbelievable run to salvation. Knowing how Greek football operates, no doubt he will be replaced in the summer, but at least on Sunday he can close his eyes and pretend that the cheering is just for him.

Verdict: 1-0

Panionios v Larissa

GW says: Having preserved their Super League status, Panionios are more interested in holding on to left-back Giorgos Tzavellas, who has been one of the few bright spots of a miserably mediocre campaign. The Panthers may struggle to hold on to the Greek international, who has been linked with several clubs abroad as well as the Athens big guns. The less said about Larissa's season the better and they will be on the end of a defeat in Nea Smyrni.

Verdict: 1-0

NM says: After a change of manager, Larissa have picked up the points they need for safety but they will still want to get something from this game to be absolutely sure. Panionios have less incentive to try hard than a donkey being fed a mouldy carrot, so they shouldn't threaten the visitors too much. A draw would suit both sides.

Verdict: 0-0

PAOK v Kavala

GW says: Three successive defeats have ended PAOK's title aspirations but they remain third, just two points adrift of Olympiakos and will be keen to try and prime themselves for the play-offs by stealing second place ahead of the Reds. They need a win to boost confidence and I predict they'll get it against sixth-placed Kavala, who have impressed following their promotion.

Verdict: 2-1

Leo Sayer, the PAOK of the music worldNM says: What happened to PAOK? Like curly-haired 80s pop star Leo Sayer, they burned brightly for a while but then faded to nothing. Fernando Santos will be glad to welcome back Lucio Filomeno who scored a hat-trick in a training match during the week. Look out for the men in black to rediscover the thunder in their hearts as they try to finish the season in style and roll on into the Champions League playoffs with some momentum.

Verdict: 3-0

Panthrakikos v Olympiakos

GW says: They title hopes may be thinner than a piece of tracing paper which has gone through the washing machine a few times but Olympiakos will still give it everything in this one. Panthrakikos have endured a woeful campaign and are heading back to more familiar surroundings in the second tier next season. Away win.

Verdict: 0-2

NM says: Panthrakikos had been on the way to being the worst team to ever play in top flight Greek soccer but an impressive turnaround in the second-half of the season has restored their respectability. It's a quality that is in short supply at Olympiakos at the moment given the internal disputes and the ongoing negotiations at boardroom level. However, this shouldn't stop the Reds from notching up an away win.

Verdict: 1-3

Skoda Xanthi v Atromitos (Net)

GW says: The Skoda men have been in desperate form in the second half of the season and only two victories would suffice to maintain their survival hopes. Atromitos are languishing in the safety of mid-table and this will work in Xanthi's favour.

Verdict: 1-0

NM says: Even adding Nathan "The Duke" Ellington to their ranks has not helped revive Xanthi's plummeting fortunes. Atromitos have proved a tough nut to crack but the home side, which is desperate for all three points, should have enough to get the win here.

Verdict: 2-1
