AEK and Panathinaikos are clashing on Sunday for the top spot in the Super League play-offs, but their rivalry has increased this week over the signing of Greece midfielder Costas Katsouranis.
The curtain to the domestic season is going down on Sunday evening with PAOK’s game against Larissa, that will change nothing in the final table as PAOK willfinish third and Larissa fourth, and the deciding game at the Olympic Stadium between the Athens rivals.
The winner of the tie will represent Greece in this summer’s qualifying rounds of the Champions League along with champions Olympiakos.
The draw favours Panathinaikos who lead the play-off standings, but AEK will hope the support by their fans can help them overcome the Greens.
Panathinaikos also aim at strengthening their squad considerably this summer and have reported reached a deal with Katsouranis, who belongs to Portuguese giants Benfica.
Yet a clause in the contract Benfica had signed when they bought the player from AEK suggested the Lisbon club to pay AEK 5 million euros if the player is then sold to another Greek club.
Panathinaikos have reportedly found a way to go around this clause, but AEK have sent letters to Benfica and UEFA warning they will do everything to protect their rights.
Meanwhile AEK announced on Friday their Argentine goalkeeper Sebastian Saja signed a new contract that will keep him in the Athens club for the next three years.
Sources even suggested that Saja took a pay cut in order to stay at AEK, who are suffering from serious financial problems.
