Attica Springboks got their championship campaign off to a bright start with a 20-7 win over Iraklis at Glyka Nera. Worryingly for the future of the championship, the other two fixtures scheduled to take place in round two failed to take place with Colossus Rhodes and Mecedones Evosmos pulling out of their games against Athens and Athens Spartans respectively because of travel problems.
The federation will have to rule on the outcomes of these games, either awarding them to the home sides or penciling in a date for them to be played. However, these two no-shows follow Spartans' failure to travel to Rhodes in round 1.
That means that only three of six league games have taken place so far this season with Spartans and Rhodes still waiting for their first action.
Shambles is hardly the word for it. As to who is to blame and how this can be resolved, that is one for the clubs and the federation to discuss behind closed doors.
The game which did go ahead proved to be a good one with Springboks using their strength and, ultimately, numerical advantage to overcome a spirited Iraklis. Injuries reduced the visitors to 14 at half-time and then 13 later in the second half.
The first half was a tight affair, Courcelle putting the Springboks ahead with a penalty before number eight Fornes scored an opportunistic try, pouncing on a loose ball that slipped out of the grasp of an Iraklis back in his own in-goal area.
The try, which came right on the half-time whistle, was not converted meaning that Attica turned around with an 8-0 lead.
Iraklis had missed with a couple of penalties in the first half and reduced to 14 at the break they were forced to soak up more pressure, narrowly escaping another try opportunity against them.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, they came back into the game on the counter-attack, scrum-half Dagdelenis making an interception and cantering 40 metres to score the try. Inside centre Kouroumihakis banged over the conversion to reduce the Attica lead to a single point.
Five minutes later, new Springboks lock Barrable drove his way through for a try which was converted by Courcelle.
Iraklis were down to 13 men but still chased the game. As expected, however, the bounce fell the other way with Springboks ending the game with their third try - with wing Agostini skipping past three tackles and chasing 50 metres to the line.
The kick went astray but by that stage Attica Springboks had won the day. Iraklis, on the other hand, showed what could be done with commitment before and during the game.
