Xanthi and Larissa continued their good recent form on Saturday with wins over Atromitos and Levadiakos respectively to move up the Super League.
Xanthi came out on top in a five-goal thriller in Athens but were hanging on at the end after almost letting a three-goal lead slip.
The team from northern Greece raced into the lead with three goals in an hour. Polish midfielder Rafal Grzelak, who joined Xanthi in January, crossed for Stavros Lambriakos to open the scoring in the 28th minute.
Grzelak then grabbed a goal of his own just before half-time. Xanthi went 3-0 up in the hour mark when the Pole scored directly from a free-kick.
The game looked done and dusted but Atromitos forced their way back in. Striker Thanassis Tsigas reduced the deficit in the 68th minute. He added a second in the 78th minute with one of the goals of the season, somehow managing to hook the ball into the net after slipping and falling on his backside.
The win means that Xanthi have 28 points after 19 games. Atromitos are 10th with 21 points.
In Saturday's other game Larissa won 1-0 at Levadiakos to put relegation worries behind them.
The home side missed a penalty in the 16th minute through Brazilian midfielder Anderson. Larissa capitalised just 15 minutes later when Nektarios Alexandrou prodded home for the only goal of the game.
Larissa's second consecutive win moves them up to 9th on 22 points. Levadiakos stay in 12th, just above the relegation places, on 18 points.
