Douvalidis, who set a new national record of 13.46 in the heats, came fifth in his semi-final.
In truth he did not run a great race in the semi, hitting almost every hurdle.
Nevertheless, he came fifth with a time of 13.55. Fourth spot would have secured him a place in the final.
The heat was won by Cuban Dayron Robles, who is the favorite for the gold medal.
"I am very proud of my performance. It feels great to have been in the starting blocks three times in this great stadium," said a beaming Douvalidis.
"I think the time has come for me to be held in good regard on the international scene. I hope that I will be able to keep improving over the next two years, injuries permitting."
Greece's hopes of adding another sailing medal to its already meagre collection hit the rocks on Wednesday when Iordanis Paschalidis and Konstantinos Trigonis dropped out of contention in the Tornado class.
