Barney Spender

A sports journalist since 1988, this yeoman of Somerset has written for a number of leading magazines and newspapers such as The Times, Guardian and Sunday Times.

Between 1993 and 1996 he was a director of MWP Media Sport in South Africa.

He moved to Athens in 2004 for the Olympics and now works as Greek sports correspondent for Reuters, Athens News and the BBC World Service.

He presents a daily news show for Athens International Radio and is also the editor of Ground Rules: A Celebration of Test Cricket (Dakini 2003).

Personal sporting highlights include running three marathons - including the Athens Classic Marathon in 2002 - and playing County Cricket....for Meath in Ireland.

For his sins he follows the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspur, Yeovil Town and Somerset County Cricket Club. Consequently, he has learnt not to take sport too seriously.

Nick Malkoutzis

His first sporting memories are as a five-year-old recreating West Ham's historic 1980 FA Cup final victory over Arsenal in his back garden. There have been few moments for him to recreate since then but Nick has made up for this by writing about sport instead.

After working for the BBC in London, Nick moved to Athens just in time for the 2004 Olympics. During the Games, he worked for the Associated Press and watched 10 different sports.

Nick has also worked for Reuters and Athens International Radio, where he co-presented a morning news show.

He currently works for Kathimerini English Edition, which he joined in September 2004. Nick has attended two World Cups and has watched football in nine countries on three continents.

Nick has a Master's Degree in International Relations from the LSE but his travels have taught him that sport is a much better way of understanding the world than political theory.

Apart from supporting West Ham, Nick also has the misfortune of being a fan of Iraklis as members of his family have represented the Thessaloniki club in the past.

This has given Nick a unique perspective on sport and he is in a better position than most to truly appreciate that beauty of the game is in taking part and not in winning.
